BIDFOOD DUO RECOGNISED FOR GOING THE EXTRA MILE DURING COVID IN NEW YEAR HONOURS LIST 2021

After an extra-ordinary year, where many people within the industry have gone way beyond the extra mile to help others, Bidfood’s CEO, Andrew Selley, expressed his pride that two of his team – Jim Gouldie, (Supply Chain and Technical Services Director), and Steve Clarke, (Managing Director, Wholesale) – have been singled out for their commitment and support to hospitality sector and those in need during Covid – with recognition in the New Year Honours List 2021.

Both Steve and Jim have been awarded an MBE for their services to the vulnerable during the course of pandemic.

According to Andrew, Steve and Jim did not stop working “night and day” for weeks, giving their all, in order to make sure supplies were kept running and reached people that needed them the most:

“Many people went the ‘extra mile’ during 2020 and Jim and Steve were at the forefront of everything that epitomises the very best in helping others across a period of great adversity.

“During that first lockdown, there was worry, fear, and concern around the continuity of food supply across our customers such as hospitals, schools and local councils who were trying to meet the needs of their customers and protect the vulnerable. There were complexities to be considered – not just residents in care, or patients in hospitals, but ensuring the essential frontline staff working across these sites could be fed whilst working and had access to food supplies when they finished their shifts.  All in addition to setting up the shield pack initiative in just seven days to feed clinically vulnerable people who had to self-isolate at home”.

“Jim and Steve worked tirelessly to ensure continuity of supplies and service to customers whilst dealing with the unknown. Whether addressing availability challenges as manufacturers struggled to maintain production levels, (with social distancing or closed facilities), delayed food imports, contingency planning for Brexit, or juggling excess stocks when much of the hospitality sector had to close its doors, and mitigating the food waste that could have resulted.”

“All of us at Bidfood are immensely proud of what Jim and Steve have achieved, and this honour could not have been bestowed on two more worthy individuals. They are both incredibly modest and I know they will say that this recognition is for the whole Bidfood team.”

Jim – who oversees supply operations, stock and replenishment, property and facilities, technical services, and quality processes and standards – worked tirelessly to balance supply against demand and maintain levels of service and availability to customers, and meet their changing needs; which included providing food to the public when Bidfood opened its doors and offered click and collect and home delivery services to those struggling to access deliveries from supermarkets.

Steve – who is responsible for all of Bidfood’s depot operations and 3,500 employees across the UK – was responsible for putting in place and implementing new ‘safe systems’ and ways of working, as well as contactless deliveries to protect customers, the public and staff as the pandemic took hold.  He set up twelve packing houses and created a production model and schedules that would ensure Bidfood had adequate product, resource and capacity to meet all needs.

Both Jim and Steve worked an average of 18 hours a day (often into the early hours of the morning), seven days a week and without taking a single day off for over two months.

Speaking of his MBE, Steve says:

“I know I speak for both Jim and myself in saying that we are totally bowled over and humbled, and very honoured to have been recognised in this way.  And I would like to highlight all our colleagues and the role each and every person played in making things happen and ultimately, in making a real difference to many people’s lives during 2020”.

Andrew concluded:

“Both Steve and Jim truly moved mountains to help those most in need.  To us they are true heroes and we cannot express how delighted everyone is within the Bidfood business that they have received this recognition”.

DEFRA FOOD WHOLESALE SECTOR SURVEY

The latest Defra industry sector survey (link to survey here) requests information covering wholesale food sector and provides a key opportunity for businesses to share intelligence with the government on the impacts that the end of the EU Withdrawal transition period and, additionally, the new COVID lockdown restrictions have had and are having on the sector.

Following the announcement of national lockdown, the Chancellor has announced further support available to help businesses. Further, detailed information is available here. The business support schemes continue to distinguish between businesses that have been forced to close and those which may continue to operate but are nonetheless significantly impacted by related closures. For the latter group, additional funding has been made available to the Additional Restrictions Grant scheme (ARG), which will be administered by local authorities. Guidance bringing wholesalers clearly within scope of the ARG has been provided to local authorities, which have been urged to make prompt award decisions and payments. Wholesalers are encouraged to apply for this tailored assistance. Wholesalers will also continue to be able to utilise the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CRJS), which will now remain open until the end of April 2021.

We are aware that wholesale operations are significantly impacted by enforced closure of client businesses and, in particular, by the reduced demand arising from hospitality and leisure industry closures. We are also aware of existing and related business concerns over debt, storage, waste and changing unit costs for supplying the public sector services which remain operational. We are grateful for recent representations to the Department on these and related matters.

We are strongly encouraging participation in the current survey in order to support our aim of keeping the situation in the wholesale sector under close review through continued evidence gathering, quantification and dialogue with the sector and its representative bodies including the Federation of Wholesale Distributors, in order that effective discussions can continue in the Wholesale Task and Finish Group and appropriate representations within government can be made as and when needs arise.

HEALTH & SAFETY CONFERENCE 25TH FEBRUARY 2021

Just over 11 years ago the Federation launched its very first Health & Safety Conference, since then we have gained quite a following from health & safety professionals to company directors, managers and maintenance teams.

Our success can only be attributed to listening to our members and wider industry, analysing previous delegate feedback and addressing pertinent topics in short sharp presentations. Despite the pandemic we thought it crucial to continue this tradition and deliver this on a virtual platform.

If, like many you have spent valuable time attending virtual health & safety events to find very little of the content, you signed up for, you can rest assured the BFFF Health & Safety conference will deliver 100% what you signed up for.

Our Keynote Speaker for the day, Dr Shaun Lundy, Director of Tetra Consulting who will take us through the challenges faced by Health and Safety Practitioners, now with the addition burden of COVID. • Musculoskeletal Disorders MSD’s,
  • Working at Height,

BRAKES DUO RECOGNISED IN NEW YEAR HONOURS LIST

Alex Mayfield and Ricky Sercombe awarded MBEs as Brakes supported the effort to feed the nation in lockdown

Two key figures from Brakes, the leading foodservice company, have been recognised in the latest New Year’s Honours list for their roles in launching the Government’s programme to provide food boxes to the clinically vulnerable during lockdown.

Brakes’ Supply Chain and Operations Director, Alex Mayfield, and Lead Solution Designer, Ricky Sercombe, were awarded MBEs, recognising their pivotal roles in leading the Brakes team that created and launched a service to support the shielding clinically vulnerable with vital food boxes during the first nationwide lockdown.

Working with the Government, Brakes, in partnership with Bidfood, conceived and launched the service, delivering the first boxes direct to those who most needed them in only nine days.  We are very proud that Brakes colleagues have been recognised for the role they played as essential ‘key workers’, that alongside many other largely unseen organisations, ensured food and supplies got through to those in most need.

Brakes was also responsible for food supply to critical institutions such as the NHS and the care sector as they struggled to cope with the difficulties caused by the pandemic, and worked with retailers to provide much needed products to fill empty shelves in the early days of the crisis.

Alex Mayfield was instrumental in developing and leading Brakes’ approach to creating this unique service, coordinating supply, procurement, packing and distribution in record time.  Ricky Sercombe was integral in ensuring the initial data was collated into a meaningful and workable plan, overcoming issues with its accuracy, consistency and timeliness, working round the clock to ensure that deliveries could be made to the shielded vulnerable population.

Hugo Mahoney, CEO at Brakes, said: “The MBEs given to Alex and Ricky reflect the resilience, innovation and resourcefulness of our business in developing and launching a service to support the clinically vulnerable at a time when many of those most in need were unable to access food and essential supplies.

“The well-deserved honours are a fantastic recognition of the boundless energy and resourcefulness they displayed in leading their teams at a very challenging time.  I’m very proud of how they drew the business together to deliver such a valuable service so quickly, at a time when many supermarkets were displaying empty shelves and were not able to provide delivery slots.

“Brakes rose to this challenge as one, and the awards recognise the dedication and commitment from the thousands of drivers, packers, contact centre operators and planners that created and delivered this service from a standing start in days.”

Alex Mayfield said: “I am delighted and proud to be among those honoured. This has been a difficult year for everyone, but particularly the hospitality industry. The food box scheme for the vulnerable shielded allowed all of us at Brakes to show our resilience and capabilities at the most difficult time. To be recognised for my contribution in creating the scheme is humbling and amazing.”

Ricky Sercombe said: “I couldn’t believe it when I got the email and four weeks later it hasn’t truly sunk in. On reflection I can only say how proud I am. Not personally, but of how everyone at Brakes was able to support those needing food in lockdown. Colleagues across Brakes worked so hard to make deliveries possible. The greatest thing to see was the feedback our drivers received from all over the country, from those they had delivered boxes to.”
