THE CARBON CHALLENGE

On the BFFF Business Conference Sustainability Day we were joined by Danielle Mulder from Carbon Intelligence and Annelie Selander from Nomad who explained the challenges and processes for understanding your carbon footprint.

Danielle commenced by explaining that businesses can now access a scientifically backed process to help you understand firstly your drivers and emissions and then what actions you need to take based to help achieve a global temperature rise of under 2°C.

Whilst no one company, organisation, or country, can achieve this on their own, by aligning everyone to the same goal and standards it is hoped we will achieve this. Every business in the UK also needs to take action if the UK is to achieve the target set by Governemnt net zero by 2050.

Annelie said from her experience in Nomad it was essential to understand the drivers of emissions within your own business. This is because unless you can measure – how can you take action to reduce?

She also highlighted that their processes and action taken had resulted in a 21% reduction in emission in 2020 versus 2019.

The biggest challenge going forward is the Scope 3 emissions that come from outside of their business.

If all companies were to undertake an analysis of their Scope 1 (a company’s own emissions that it controls) and Scope 2 (purchase of energy from outside) then the data required by Nomad, or any other company, would be simplified.

The advice from Danielle, bringing in the experts who can help you, even if you are a small business there are resources out there to assist you.

The presentation from this year’s Frozen Food Business Conference will be made available to all attendees.  If you were not able to purchase a ticket, please contact Siobhan O’Callaghan.

PRIMARY AUTHORITY TRAINING

Following discussion with BFFF member NFUM, we identified the opportunity to support their agents by offering training on a range of food and health & safety issues, that potential clients may face in today’s ever more complex trading environment.

The first of these training sessions took place recently with a focus on the role of Primary Authority.

BFFF were one of the first trade bodies to become involved in the Primary Authority Co-ordinated Partnerships when they were launched in 2013.

Since then, we have developed this concept and now have four partnerships covering:

  • Trading Standards with Cambridgeshire County Council (Co-ordinated Partnerships)
  • Health and Safety with Wakefield Council (Co-ordinated Partnerships)
  • Environmental Health and Trading Standards with South Cambridgeshire District Council (Co-ordinated Partnerships)
  • Fire Safety with Essex Fire & Rescue Service (Direct and Co-ordinated Partnerships)

It was the strengths of these partnerships that enabled the Federation to undertake such an effective training session, supported by key speakers from our four Primary Authority Partners:

  • Caroline Clarke from Office for Product and Safety Standards (OPSS)
  • Helen Atkinson of Wakefield Council
  • Paul Maylunn of South Cambridgeshire Trading Standards Service
  • Brian Dean from Essex Fire and Rescue Service

We were also able to call on BFFF member apetito to give some practical insight, on the importance of having a Fire Safety Partnership following a devastating fire at one of their factories.

To round off the session, another BFFF member, Shield Safety Group provided an overview of the support they can provide companies in the area of Primary Authority.

Feedback from the independent agents and the NFUM team was very positive, and they were pleased by the high level of support and help that can be provided by BFFF and our Primary Authority Partners.

Primary Authority is a means for businesses to receive assured and tailored advice on meeting regulations such as environmental health, trading standards or fire safety through a single point of contact. This ensures start-ups get it right at the outset and enables all businesses to invest with confidence in products, practices and procedures, knowing that the resources they devote to compliance are well spent.

This was very evident in the practical examples given by the speakers, who provide effective support for companies covered by a Primary Authority Partnership. Whilst individual companies can join the scheme, through trade bodies such as the BFFF we can provide much wider access to information and guidance.

Simon Brentnall, our Head of Health & Safety, brought this to life by sharing, that following an event held by the BFFF on the ‘Safe Handling of Ammonia’ a BFFF member stopped a potential ammonia leak at their factory by putting into practice what he had learnt at the seminar.

The training was held online, due to the Pandemic, and provided a very effective way of delivering the training.

If you would like to learn more about our Primary Authority Partnership, please contact either Simon Brentnall or Denise Rion.

SOLVING PROBLEMS THROUGH SURPLUS

BFFF member Company Shop not only sponsored two days of the BFFF Business Conference they also contributed to our Sustainability Day on Thursday.

We were joined by Sally Wake, Head of Strategic Relationship, who provided an overview of the role that Company Shop fulfil.

Sally explained that whilst food re-distribution is seen as something quite new, Company Shop have been in existence for 50 years. This provides them with a wealth of experience and knowledge in how surplus food can be used.

Sally explained they see surplus just as ‘good products’ in the ‘wrong place’. Whilst a high percentage of the products sold through the 16 stores need some form of manual intervention to ensure they comply legally, e.g. new labelling, this ensures the product is legally compliant when sold through the member only stores.

Sally also explained the ethos behind the 6 Community Shops all located in some of the most deprived areas of the country. Those shops supported by Company Shop, and a number of industry partners, provide support and food to some of the most vunerable in society. These stores provide a full range of product for their target consumer with low prices of staple food including fresh fruit and vegetables. This is unlike the Company Shop which Sally described as being more like TK Maxx – never sure what you are going to find.

Now owned by Biffa it is clear that Company Shop will go from strength to strength – even now looking at manufacturing operations to identify waste that can be re-distributed by using their knowledge and skills built up over 50 years of doing the right thing.

The presentation from this year’s Frozen Food Business Conference will be made available to all attendees.  If you were not able to purchase a ticket, please contact Siobhan O’Callaghan.

SHINING A LIGHT ON FOOD SERVICE

We were joined by Gavin Kelly of Lumina Intelligence who provided an in-depth overview of the Out of Home Market.

The impact of Covid on the sector has been severe with most sub-sectors seeing unprecedented declines due to various Government restrictions with the overall market seeing a decline of just under 49%.

Despite this Gavin highlighted that some sectors had seen a positive impact such as Takeaway and specialist food and beverage stores like ‘high end’ butchers. This was driven by consumers wanting to replicate ‘eat out’ at home.

Gavin outlined that based upon data they have produced three possible scenarios called:

  • Upbeat +40.5% growth over 2020
  • Mid-core +31.8% growth over 2020
  • Downbeat +20.2% growth over 2020

However, the recovery will look different from the past both in terms of the channels and players.

The disruption caused by the Pandemic will create winners who show innovation and flexibility.

Gavin also highlighted that technology is being adopted at an accelerated pace by consumers.

The presentation from this year’s Frozen Food Business Conference will be made available to all attendees.  If you were not able to purchase a ticket, please contact Siobhan O’Callaghan.
