WRAP FOOD WASTE ROADMAP – UPDATE AND FUTURE PLANS

The UK Food Waste Reduction Roadmap was launched in September 2018, initially with the support of 70 large UK food Businesses, including all the major UK retailers, brand manufacturers and own label producers. By March this year, the number has supports has increased to 240, of which 84% have implemented a best practice ‘Target, Measure & Act’ (TMA) approach in their UK operations.

WRAP continues to develop new Roadmap resources, to help businesses to measure and report their food surplus and waste consistently, and with confidence. Recent additions to their guidance include how to measure ‘food waste discharged to sewer’ and a toolkit to advise businesses on how to deliver ‘Whole Chain Food Waste Reduction Plan’ projects by adopting a farm to fork approach.

WRAP have also published over 50 food surplus and waste case studies on their website, these can be viewed by clicking on the link here. The UK Food Waste Reduction initiative has so far resulted in a 17% reduction in food waste, which equates to 180kt, with a value of over £300m.

All the FWR Roadmap resources are free to download and use and if your business is interested in signing to the Roadmap, and being publicly recognised on the WRAP website, please contact Ian Bowles at this email ian.bowles@wrap.org.uk

Nestlé fined after worker traps arm in machine

Nestlé UK Ltd has been sentenced for breaching health and safety regulations after an employee was dragged into a machine on the production line of their Albion Mills site in Halifax.

While observing the operation of the After Eight production machine, the technical operator placed his right hand close to a gap in the machine housing, Bradford Crown Court was told. An emery cloth held in his right hand was dragged into the machine taking his arm with it. The incident happened on on 13 February 2016.

The employee was unable to reach any of the emergency stop buttons located around the machine from the position in which he was trapped. He had to be released from the machine by paramedics. He suffered a double compound fracture to his arm, which required surgery.

The HSE’s investigation found the company had failed to prevent access to dangerous moving parts of the machine, namely an ‘in-running nip’. There was a gap large enough to allow access at a belt conveyor entry on the After Eight line.

Nestle UK Ltd of City Place Gatwick pleaded guilty to breaching Reg 11 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. It was fined £640,000 and ordered to pay £26,234 in costs.

Speaking after the hearing, HSE Inspector Jacqueline Ferguson said: “This is a tragic incident that could so easily have been avoided. The risks inherent in failures to properly guard dangerous parts of machinery are well known in industry and to Nestlé.

“Companies should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action against those that fall below the required standards.”

Why CE is No Guarantee – Arco Virtual Lab Tour

Arco, the UK’s leading Experts in Safety, invite you to take a virtual tour of their Quality and Product Assurance Laboratory, the UK’s first safety distributor in-house laboratory.

Arco’s very own UKAS and SATRA accredited laboratory which sits at the heart of Arco’s promise – to keep people safe at work.

Take a guided tour around the 3 labs to see first-hand the 5-stage assurance process Arco conduct to make sure they keep that promise.

The laboratory is used to implement a thorough testing regime throughout product development and beyond. It also compliments our certification and due diligence testing programme. The main focuses of the lab are chemical permeability testing, mechanical testing of safety footwear, gloves and Hi-Viz clothing in accordance with the relevant EN standards. Arco aim’s not simply to test to standards, but to exceed them and challenge them for the benefit of our customers and ultimately our end users.

Getting in the car and trusting that your seatbelt is going to work, should you need it to, is the same as trusting the CE mark on PPE products. Out of 100 products, only 1 needs to pass for it to be given a CE mark, so how do you know which products to trust? CE markings do not guarantee compliance.

Arco are able to ensure compliance by carrying out the tests listed below; you will be able to see these tests in action during a 30 Minute virtual tour coming soon.

  • Physical Lab
  • Chemical Lab
  • Textile Lab
  • Slip Testing – Pendulum test
  • Chemical permeation testing
  • Fire resistance testing
  • Toecap failures
  • Azo dyes testing
  • Chromaticity and luminance testing
  • 10 Seconds to save a life.
  • Glove legislation and actions

We need to add – to register your interest for the Arco lab tour, please contact simonbrentnall@bff.co.uk or carlabrown@bfff.co.uk
