As new rules approach for the importation of Products of Animal Origin (POAO) and high-risk goods from Europe starting on 1st October, this will mean many of these products will require Health Certificates signed by an approved vet.
With the large amounts of goods arriving daily from many EU countries this will place a massive burden on the vet capacity in many European countries.
Defra have assured us that they are in contact with EU authorities and reassured us that vet capacity is sufficient, however, we are hearing of real concerns on the ground that challenges this view.
The Federation for the Frozen Industry in Germany have expressed real concerns to us when we asked for their view.
We have also been told by one member that ships product from Ireland 24/7 that their vet now has to cover 20 companies and works Mon-Fri 9-5pm – the mismatch is obvious.
If any member has knowledge of issues with vet capacity in the UK or EU States then please get in contact with Siobhan so we can collate a real view of potential issues.
