COURTAULD COMMITMENT EXTENDED TO 2030

WRAP have recently announced that the Courtauld Commitment, which launched in 2015 as a ten-year programme, is to be extended to 2030.

The Commitment is already helping the UK food and drink sector to deliver against the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 to halve food waste and this move means that it now aligns seamlessly with that wider global target.

The full press release can be found here

The core Courtauld Commitment targets have been recast to reflect the extension and expansion of the agreement, as follows:

  • A 50% absolute reduction in GHG emissions associated with food and drink consumed in the UK by 2030, against a 2015 baseline.
  • A 50% per capita reduction in food waste by 2030 vs the UK 2007 baseline.
  • To achieve sustainable water management (quality and quantity) in the top 20 most important product and ingredient sourcing areas in the UK and overseas – covering 50% of product ingredients deemed ‘at risk’ from water insecurity.

To enable the benefits of the Courtauld Commitment 2030 to be accessible to smaller businesses, WRAP have now also introduced an Associate Membership model meaning small and medium-sized enterprises can access a dedicated online platform with resources to help implement strategies towards the core targets on carbon, water stewardship and food waste prevention.

The Courtauld Commitment Annual Report, has also recently been published highlighting many of the activities of the last year, including:

TRACK AND TRACE UPDATE: DEFRA APPROVED LIST

We have been advised by Defra that Track and Trace will be contacting the 500 businesses that will be offered to join the daily testing of employees to ensure they can come out of Self Isolation to continue to work. Defra are unable to provide the BFFF with a list of the companies included due to commercial reasons.

This is a copy of the full email that has gone to the 500 companies. Please note that a webinar will take place at 11am on Monday 26 July. We are not sure if this is an open webinar or only for the 500 companies selected, but there is a link below. If you have not been selected you can email Defra to be considered for inclusion. They have confirmed it is their intention to expand the scheme wider in the coming weeks. It is likely although not yet confirmed that this scheme may go beyond 16 Aug COVID19.Coordinationunit.Agrifoodchain@defra.gov.uk

To whom it may concern,

You may already be aware that in recognition of rising absence rates across the food sector, last week the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced that ‘Daily contact testing’ will be rolled out to critical workplaces so that non-household contacts who would otherwise be required to self-isolate are instead able to take daily tests and work that day if they test negative. Priority testing sites at the largest supermarket distribution centres have already begun being set up, with roll-out to key manufacturing, food processing and wholesale sites planned to take place this week. In total 500 sites across the food supply chain have been identified.

I am writing to confirm that that your organisation’s sites are part of this initial allocation, and that your business details have been passed to NHS Test and Trace to begin the on-boarding process.

Tomorrow you can expect the NHS Test & Trace team to give you access to an online platform, which holds the legal declaration, clinical Standard Operating Procedures and guidance documents to enable you to mobilise daily contact testing.  (Please note, you have been identified as the key point of contact for your organisation and access to the online platform is personal to you; it will not work if forwarded on.)

You will also receive an invite to attend an mobilisation webinar, which will be running daily this week at 11am. For ease, the link for tomorrow’s webinar is below.

Mobilisation Webinar – Monday 26 Jul @ 1100hrs

You can share this link and the guidance documents within the online platform with whoever you need to.

We strongly encourage you to take part in daily contact testing, but in the mean time are grateful for your patience and ongoing hard work to keep food supply chains running. You will be given further information and support by T&T, and be guided through the process, so we ask that you wait until the webinars to seek any clarifications you may have. The purpose of this email is to signpost the process, and to encourage your participation.

If, however, you decide (either before or after attending a webinar) that you are not interested in taking part in Daily Contact Testing please let us know by reply to this email ASAP, so that we can extend the offer to other priority sites.

Defra has taken a risk-based approach to identify those businesses to prioritise for testing to ensure food supply across England chains hold up. As such, we recognise you may have partners or suppliers who are not part of the initial participants, but the ambition is for daily contact testing to be rolled out to more food supply chain workplaces over the coming weeks.

Note also that this Daily Contact Testing scheme is different to the scheme offering a reasonable excuse for named individuals who are close contacts of positive cases to leave self-isolation for the purpose of undertaking critical work where their absence would result in serious disruption to critical services. This will only apply to a very narrow cohort of critical workers, and is being managed through a separate inbox: emergencies@defra.gov.uk

Thank you again

GROUPAGE WEBINAR

We continue to explore connections with companies to support members faced with logistics issues arising from Brexit. Groupage continues to be a major challenge due to the complexity of the process especially around POAO and High-Risk goods.

Roswell Spedition GMBH is a long-term member of the BFFF who can support members in transporting POAO and High-Risk goods to most points in Europe. We are currently preparing more information on the services offered by Roswell and will update members shortly.

New member Unsworth is a custom broker offering a range of services from full loads to groupage with the capability to offer a total service from end to end.

To date members have had to only contend with new rules when exporting but as

new rules to come into force from 1st October on goods coming into the UK from the EU, it is vital members are well prepared for even more change.

Charles Hogg of Unsworth will join us for a webinar on 17th August to explore the processes now required to export effectively into the EU, and to discuss the new processes all members will face in importing products from the EU from 1st October this year.

SURVEYS – WE KNOW IT’S A LOT

We would like to apologise to members for the number of surveys we have issued in the last few weeks.

We have issued our own surveys around both HGV driver shortage impact, combined with a general labour and skills shortage.

The Federation has to seek this information because each time we press Government on these issues, their response is always ‘provide the quantitative data to prove what you are claiming’.

We have also issued two Defra surveys; we feel it is important to ensure members are also aware of these Government run surveys.

Hopefully, all of the responses will help us ensure the Government recognises the real challenges being faced by members at a time when many are still recovering from the impact of Covid 19, and facing the real issues around Brexit, and the wider problems of rising costs.

STAR REFRIGERATION’S COLD STORE MONITORING SOFTWARE ETHOS DELIVERS 5GWH REDUCTION IN ASDA’S ENERGY COSTS

Ethos software has been installed in nine of Asda’s CDCs and contributed to a saving of 1,100 tonnes of CO2 emissions in four years.

One of the UK’s largest supermarket chains has successfully slashed its carbon footprint dramatically by taking steps to optimise energy efficiency across nine chilled distribution centres (CDCs). By installing Star’s Ethos software over the last four and a half years, which monitors refrigeration plant performance 24/7, Asda has saved 5GWh on energy costs and 1,100 tonnes of CO2e across the sites optimised with Ethos software.

With the help of Star Refrigeration’s data monitoring business, Star Data Analytics (SDA), and City Facilities Management, Asda has reduced its energy consumption by 35% since 2010.

Through focusing on energy optimisation and reduction, Asda has driven down its overall energy consumption at all of its CDCs in mainland UK. This has been achieved by actioning Ethos’s strategic energy data insights which were produced from the information collected from the existing refrigeration plants to reduce energy usage.

Asda has also signed up to the cold chain sector’s Climate Change Agreement (CCA) – a UK government incentive for business in energy intensive industries.

Andrew Dodson, Energy Bureau Manager at City Facilities Management said, “This project has highlighted how cross-company collaborations can work successfully. Both Star and City Facilities Management offered specific expertise to Asda to help it achieve its vision of vastly reducing its carbon footprint. By investing in preventative maintenance, data monitoring and energy performance optimisation of its cold stores, Asda is now reaping the financial rewards too”.

The Ethos software was first installed in Asda’s Bedford chilled distribution centre with impressive results. In four years of monitoring the plant and making recommendations to improve efficiency, the site reported energy savings of 556,000 kWh and also saved 760 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.

Brian Churchyard, Engineering & Energy Senior Manager at Asda, said “We have made tangible reductions in energy use throughout our chilled depots whilst continuing to run our business as usual with no disruption, and have not decreased our capacity requirements resulting in reduced operational costs improving like-for-like profit margins.  These changes behind the scenes also reduce your overall carbon footprint.”

Ethos is a bespoke data driven analysis software designed by a team of award-winning senior refrigeration consultants, field engineers and software engineers. It collects data from refrigeration plants in real time and the cloud based software then compares actual operating performance with a computer model of theoretical performance at the given ambient conditions and operating temperatures.

This comparison of actual performance with the ‘digital twin’, highlights any energy gap and enables the SDA team to identify problems and suggest corrective actions to reduce energy usage and meet environmental goals.

Live data is provide through a digital dashboard which conveys the performance clearly. Alerts are sent to plant owners and maintenance contractors when irregular equipment behaviour is detected. Additionally, a spending chart within the Ethos dashboard allows customers to see at a glance how much money is being spent running the refrigeration plant and what the potential savings could be following implementation of recommended energy insights.

With the UK following many other countries around the world by introducing legislation to decarbonise by 2050, all businesses need to have a plan to net zero. Innovative software such as Ethos can offer large gains when it comes to reducing energy usage and cutting carbon footprints.

Star Refrigeration has decades of expertise in natural refrigerants and can offer advice on the development and implementation of energy and carbon reduction strategies, including the use of modern low carbon refrigeration technology, preventative maintenance programmes and data monitoring and performance optimisation of refrigeration plants.
