Reed Boardall invests in another 30 bespoke refrigerated semi-trailers

Reed Boardall invests in another 30 bespoke refrigerated semi-trailers

Leading temperature controlled storage and distribution business Reed Boardall Group is continuing its rolling programme of fleet upgrade having recently ordered another 23 single deck semi-trailers plus seven double deck trailers as part of its 300-strong trailer fleet.

Supplied by the company’s nominated trailer partner, Fraserburgh-based vehicle manufacturer Gray & Adams, the 13.6m tri axle trailers have been built to Reed Boardall’s specifications to meet the particular needs of its individual customers. For example, the 44 pallet double deck trailers feature a moving deck tailored to the specific heights needed for the company’s deliveries; and two of the single deck trailers have been fitted with roller shutter doors as required for a specific contract.

With a total value of £2m, all of the new trailers are equipped with Carrier Vector 1550 or 1950 refrigeration units as well as full satellite tracking to enable constant monitoring of the location and temperature of the vehicles in line with Reed Boardall’s stringent quality control procedures. In addition, the double deck trailers feature super single 445 wheels and tyres for improved stability and significantly enhanced tyre wear.

“As a business, we are committed to ensuring that our fleet is as modern and efficient as possible to enable us to provide the best and most competitive service for our customers, consequently, all of our trailers are less than five years old and our tractors are under three years old,” explains Graeme Richardson, managing director of Reed Boardall’s transport division. “These latest trailers feature improved aerodynamics and load fill, giving them a stronger profile to deliver customers’ loads.

“Having worked with a number of trailer builders in the past, we have found that the quality and service from Gray & Adams has been outstanding as well as proving reliable in terms of consistently delivering new vehicles on time. We have established a solid relationship with the company and have been impressed by their innovative approach and continual product development, for example, our trailers now feature the most aerodynamic capping and roof vortex designs. We are already planning to order more trailers from Gray & Adams next year.”

Andrew Brown, sales director Doncaster for Gray & Adams, said: “I’ve worked with Reed Boardall for over 20 years and am well aware that they have been at the forefront of much innovation in the logistics sector.  The company was the original instigator of the moving double deck trailer concept which has massively reduced road miles and CO2 footprint as well as increasing operational efficiency.

“Now operating one of the biggest independent double deck fleets in the country, Reed Boardall continues to demand the latest innovations for better fuel efficiency, enhancing its green credentials and providing the most cost effective service for its customers. We are proud to be partnering with the company which is now the largest consolidator of frozen food in the UK.”

Reed Boardall is one of the largest temperature controlled food distribution businesses in the UK, storing and delivering frozen food from manufacturers across Britain, Europe and further afield to all the UK’s best-known supermarkets.  Operating 24/7, its 170-strong fleet of vehicles moves an average of 12,000 pallets a day and it stores around £100m worth of products on behalf of its customers.  It employs over 750 staff at its single site in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire.

Erudus adds leading wholesaler as year of rapid growth continues

Erudus adds leading wholesaler as year of rapid growth continues

Jon Shayler, chief operating officer at Erudus

An online platform providing the foodservice industry with instant access to food product data has increased its users by 180 per cent in the past 12 months.

And Erudus has also added Brakes Foodservice, which supplies caterers across the UK, to its growing list of wholesalers signed up to the platform.

Erudus has experienced significant growth in the last year including seeing the number of users benefiting from accessing the nutritional and allergen data grow from 10,000 to just under 90,000.

In addition, the number of wholesalers signed up has increased from 42 in 2016 to 117, while the number of manufacturers entering data has more than doubled from 1,135 to 2,748 in the same period. The number of products has also grown from 28,083 to more than 60,000 in two years.

And the company has exciting plans for the next 12 months as it aims to strengthen its position of being the industry solution to product data sharing.

A planned update will include 250,000 product images being made available to download for marketing material, price lists, e-commerce sites, and mobile ordering apps, where integrations are in place.

And Erudus is now planning a move to new premises to facilitate further growth and employ more staff.

Chief operating officer Jon Shayler said: “We’re pleased to see another major player in the industry join the solution to product data, with Brakes now one of the 117 wholesalers benefitting from Erudus.

“To go from 10,000 caterers utilising data from us to 90,000 in just 12 months is incredible. It’s becoming a must-have app in the foodservice industry with wholesalers, caterers, and manufacturers all thrilled with the collaborative approach of the software.

“The introduction of images is something many of our users have requested, and it’s going to be a major milestone for Erudus, and the industry, when this launches.”

Erudus is the leading foodservice data pool software and hosts the specifications of major manufacturers including Heinz, Premier Foods, and Unilever.

GS1 UK announces the appointment of Chris Tyas as new chair

GS1 UK announces the appointment of Chris Tyas as new chair

GS1 UK, the not-for-profit standards organisation, has recently named a new chair, the former global head of supply chain for Nestlé SA, Chris Tyas.

Chris joins GS1 UK after his retirement in the second half of 2018 and 36 years with the world’s largest food and drinks company.

He is a former vice chairman of GS1 UK and, more recently, the co-chair of the Consumer Goods Forum group, helping to shape the organisation’s Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative. He was named as the Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH ) region’s top-ranking supply chain executive in June 2018.

Chris steps into the position vacated by Jim Spittle, who has been in the role since 2002 and has recently become chair of SSC Ltd: NHS Supply Chain.

Chris believes that the supply chain will evolve into more of a supply network because of multichannel development and increased customisation. He has embraced technological advances in the retail process and has supported the development of digital automation as well as the use of blockchain, which he helped to implement for Nestlé’s Gerber range of food products.

Chris has joined GS1 UK at an exciting time for the organisation. The past twelve months have been transformational, with a 13 per cent growth in membership and the successful launch into the UK retail market of productDNA, a new data service that provides companies with a single language for product data sharing.

On his selection as new chair, Chris said: “I am honoured to take this role in GS1UK at such a pivotal time for the organisation. It is a body and team I have had the greatest respect for over the years and I would especially like to thank Jim Spittle for the inspiration and drive he has shown in building GS1 UK into the organisation we see today.”

Speaking on behalf of GS1 UK, Jim said: “Chris is renowned as one of the most brilliant minds in the world of retail and supply chain. He joins at a crucial time for GS1 UK as we support both the digital transformation of our existing member base and the increasing number of start-ups new to the market with foundations of trusted data.

“I am delighted that he will be overseeing the organisation’s continued growth and know he will lead the board with vision and gravitas.”

Most recently managing director at Kensey Foods in Cornwall, Mr Stapley has over 15 years board-level experience with major FMCG organisations including Marine Harvest ASA, Youngs Seafood and 2 Sisters Food Group.

Mr Stapley said: “I’m hugely excited about joining Macphie, an ambitious and respected business that is committed to growth.

“Macphie has the potential to match its ambition and I’m tremendously optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Born and raised in Glasgow, Mr Stapley’s early career was in mechanical engineering with Rolls Royce.

He then moved into a FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) sales & marketing career in the food industry, before taking on operational and general management roles.

He has significant international experience, leading a number of change strategies in China, south-east Asia and India.

“His industry experience, along with his undoubted talent and ability, make him the ideal person to lead the company as we look to grow our strong position in markets both here and overseas.”

Kara rises to the occasion with its new vegan brioche-style bun

Kara rises to the occasion with its new vegan brioche-style bun

Kara, the foodservice specialists of the Finsbury Food Group, has announced the launch of a brioche-style bun to satisfy Vegan and Dairy-Free consumers. The buns, which are available now, have been made to give operators a premium bread option that can be enjoyed by a wider remit of diners.

With the taste for brioche growing amongst consumers over the past year (interest in the bread has increased 100%[1] since last year), Kara knew there was already a hungry market for the sandwich carrier. However, with the still-growing rise of veganism amongst consumers, the bakery giant wanted to grow its offering to suit consumers who couldn’t enjoy a classic brioche bun due to their dietary needs.

Kara’s brioche-style bun substitutes the egg glaze and butter contents and replaces them with dairy-free alternatives. Despite these changes to the historic recipe, the buns do not compromise on flavour, colour or texture and can be enjoyed by both vegan, dairy-free and non-vegan diners.

Danielle Meehan, Foodservice NPD Manager, commented:

“After witnessing a rise in both veganism and interest in brioche amongst different diners, we knew we had to begin offering an option that could hit both markets with a product that satisfies the need for brioche whilst suiting the vegan lifestyle. This brioche-style bun still delivers all the flavours of a classic brioche but is a more inclusive premium burger carrier perfect for both vegan and non-vegan diners.”

Buying group warns food manufacturers about not signing up to Erudus

Buying group warns food manufacturers about not signing up to Erudus

Jon Shayler, chief operating officer at Erudus

A leading foodservice buying group is warning manufacturers they could be losing out on sales by not signing up to product specification software.

Nick Redford, managing director of Caterforce, is calling on suppliers to subscribe to Erudus to ‘work with the rest of the industry’.

Erudus enables manufacturers to quickly share changes to ingredients and allergen information with more than 100 wholesalers at the click of a button.

And Nick says Caterforce’s members place huge value on suppliers who use Erudus because of the benefits to everyone in the foodservice chain.

“Erudus is used by 117 wholesalers and 85,000 caterers,” he said. “It’s a no brainer that manufacturers should also be using it.

“Many suppliers still use the likes of Microsoft Excel and Word to provide updates to product data. This can have big consequences for wholesalers and caterers. For example, it increases the risk of human error and an end user being supplied incorrect allergen information.

“In addition, this manual process is a massive time burden. In Erudus, the manufacturer updates the product once and it’s communicated to wholesalers and caterers instantly.

“It’s time for all suppliers to see the bigger picture and work with the rest of the industry. It could be the difference between supplying a wholesaler and not.”

One Caterforce member, Castell Howell, introduced SushiSushi to Erudus and the supplier has increased sales as a direct result of signing up to the software.

Stuart Turner, founder and managing director of SushiSushi, said: “We were impressed by the features and made the decision to integrate it into our existing processes. We’ve been using Erudus for one year now and it’s fantastic.

“It adds credibility to our brand. It has allowed us to break through the glass ceiling to deal with large organisations and add significant clients to our growing customer list.

“Being a part of Erudus proves you are not a fly-by-night operation. It also shows potential customers you are capable of successfully handling big clients, for example those with multiple sites.”

It’s been a busy year for Erudus, which has seen its partnership with Nielsen Brandbank go from strength to strength, as well as launched integration partnerships within Lady Lodge Systems’ apps and SwiftCloud’s mobile ordering app to further enhance the benefits for foodservice professionals.

Jon Shayler, chief operating officer at Erudus, said: “The message from wholesalers is simple: join Erudus and use the software your customers use.

“Erudus is the largest foodservice data pool in the UK, and we are positioned to bring the entire food industry together by offering a single place for its data needs.

“In addition to encouraging new manufacturers to come on board, it’s vital that existing suppliers keep their product info up to date.”
