BFFF Lowers its Carbon Footprint with LED Lighting

With the recent COP 26 climate change conference at the forefront, we thought we would update you on the federations contribution in lowering its carbon footprint.

The old office lighting had become significantly less effective with many fluorescent tubes starting to fail and replacement lighting units obsolete, so we have replaced our office lighting panels fitted by local company LS Electrical.

We turned to LED panels which use 85% less energy than the previous fluorescent tube panels. We believe the new LED units will prove a significant cost saving for the federation, with the maintenance free LED lighting paying for itself within 3 years.

To put this into perspective, just replacing a few office lights has the potential to give the Federation a Carbon Saving per month of 0.072 tonne’s CO2 or 0.86 tonne’s CO2 per annum. In addition, there are other advantages such as providing employees with an improved working environment and also reduction in fire risk due to old light fittings failing/overheating.

PREMIUM DOG FOOD BRAND INVESTS IN STATE OF THE ART FREEZING EQUIPMENT

Butternut Box is on a mission to “put the food back into dog food”, using freshly prepared human-quality meat and vegetables for the nation’s much loved pets. Delivered direct to the doors of the pet owners, the company offers homemade, healthy meals that are tailored to the requirements of each individual dog, intended to improve their health conditions and well-being.

The premium pet food brand has a 5-year business growth plan to double sales year on year, a strategy that has driven the company’s success since start up in 2016. A move into a recently acquired industrial unit measuring over 150,000 sq.ft has enabled Butternut Box to invest in the latest technology as the business continues to grow. When it came to expanding production capacity and upgrading its entire static freezing system, Butternut Box selected Starfrost to provide a turn-key cooling solution.

Working in partnership with parent company Star Refrigeration, Starfrost implemented an end to end cooling solution for Butternut Box that has delivered benefits of energy efficiency and improved product quality.

Starfrost designed, manufactured and installed a Double Helix spiral freezer for Butternut Box that operates using an ammonia refrigeration plant supplied by Star Refrigeration. The project benefited from the expertise of the worldwide cooling solutions supplier and the UK’s leading industrial refrigeration company.

The Double Helix spiral freezer has been designed to freeze c.4000kg per hour of vacuum packed dog food pouches, which has assisted Butternut Box in doubling its processing capacity. The automated spiral freezer provides a continuous freezing solution that has allowed Butternut Box to significantly reduce freezing times and improve the quality of its freshly prepared products.

Marco Attanasio, Head of Strategic Projects at Butternut Box says: “Butternut Box has recently made a large investment to implement new technology within our processing line to drive continuous growth of the business.  Our new spiral freezer and refrigeration plant forms part of that strategy and has assisted the business with doubling production this year. The design specification also supports our overall growth plans allowing for future expansion.”

“Since the installation of our new freezing equipment, we have considerably reduced our freezing times in comparison to the static freezers that were used before and the method of freezing is consistent which has greatly improved the quality of our end product.”

Starfrost worked together with Butternut Box to design a freezing solution with high efficiency and low carbon footprint in mind. The Double Helix spiral freezer operates with two separate temperature zones which significantly reduces the total number of kW’s of low temperature refrigeration Butternut Box require to freeze the produce. This reduces the overall operational cost of the refrigeration system and emits less carbon into the atmosphere, whilst improving quality of the packaged products.

CAMPDEN BRI TO EXPLORE NEW APPLICATIONS OF PULSED ELECTRIC FIELD TECHNOLOGY

Campden BRI has begun research to identify and assess untapped practical applications of the emerging pulsed electric field (PEF) technology. The technology has already shown commercial benefits for a range of product types leading to increased throughput, reduce energy use and increased product yield.

The non-thermal PEF technology effectively uses short pulses of electricity that punch holes in cells. This modification to cells and structures offers a range of processing benefits including improved drying and freezing times whilst maintaining better product quality, reducing blanching times, improved extraction and yields and microbial pasteurisation to name a few. The scientists at Campden BRI are looking at further applications that represent the industry’s needs. They are exploring surface inactivation on bigger pieces of food products with PEF using lower field strengths alone and in combination with other hurdles and are very interested to speak with companies who may benefit from this application.

Andrew Bosman, a process engineer at Campden BRI who is leading the research, said:

“Academic research and current literature show PEF as one of the most promising emerging technologies available with a lot of untapped potential and possible applications. In additional to the research being undertaken we are also keen to work with manufacturers who are looking to exploit the benefits of the technology and realise applications with their products. Our extensive experience of working with new technologies and our ability to benchmark PEF against those we have on-site will ensure businesses will be able to gain an understanding of whether PEF truly meets their goals.”

PEF rapidly disrupts either microbial or a food’s cells (for preservation, extraction or functional benefits) without imparting significant heat. This renders it a non-thermal process and allows manufacturers to avoid, or greatly reduce, detrimental changes in the sensory and physical properties of their food products.

The scientists at Campden BRI can use their state-of-the-art pilot plant to trial a wide range of product types with the technology including any liquid, solid or pulp products – for example, fruit and vegetables in either their raw, cooked or juiced form.

The PEF technology can be moved to Campden BRI’s biosafety level 2 food processing hall which will allow the team to perform trials using some of the manufacturers target pathogens that are known to cause issues in their specific products. Campden BRI then has further testing capabilities at hand including sensory, microbiology, rheology, and chemistry which can be used to assess some of the end products attributes.

Danny Bayliss, the new technologies lead at Campden BRI who will be involved in the project, said:

“This research could open up further application areas for PEF which has been showing great commercial benefits for a range of other products and applications. The snacking sectors is one area where the technology can help manufacturers to be more sustainable by reducing water and oil use and the need for some processes saving total energy use. For this reason, we’re keen to encourage food businesses to explore the potential technology benefits for their products.”

The trials will begin on 1 September and run for 12-months.

SIMON STENNING CONFIRMED TO TALK AT THE FROZEN FOOD REPORT LIVE EVENT ON 23RD FEBRUARY 2022

Simon Stenning is the Founder of FutureFoodservice.com, a forecasting and strategic advisory service for the foodservice/hospitality industry.

FutureFoodservice – 2022 to 2025, The Next Era

Following the ‘Great Reset’ in 2021, the UK foodservice market continues to rebuild, despite many challenges, and 2022 will see significant opportunities for growth, as a full year of trading is forecast to add c.£25bn in additional revenue – but it will be different……

Simon will be describing the key trends, developments and growth areas, along with presenting the drivers of change for the next few years, taking into account macro-economic, socio-demographic, technological factors and changing consumer behaviours.

With structural changes in the market from 2020 and 2021, each sector has different growth metrics as they enter the new era, Simon will outline the factors driving growth and describe how each sector will look over the next few years. Changes have already been seen as closed sites reopen, and with further investment coming into the market, new concepts will emerge, meeting the changing consumer demands, so it will look and feel different.

What we eat will also need to reflect the Next Era of foodservice, and Simon will outline the key themes for food development, and future consumption.

To understand which sectors will benefit most from the incremental £25bn of revenue will be important for all attendees at the Frozen Food Report Live Event and Simon will break that down by sector, to deliver a thorough picture of the future foodservice market.

Come and see Simon Stenning present live on 23rd February 2022 at the Chesford Grange Hotel Kenilsworth. Our event day packages are now available to buy here.

AVIAN INFLUENZA PREVENTION ZONE IN FORCE ACROSS GB

At 5pm on 3rd November 2021, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) came into force across the whole of Great Britain.

The AIPZ means all bird keepers in GB (whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock) are required by law to take a range of biosecurity precautions.

Further details of the measures that apply in the AIPZ in England can be found in the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone declaration

For further information on the AIPZ in:

To assist all bird keepers in complying with the new rules, Government have updated the biosecurity guidance and self-assessment checklist.

The decision to implement the AIPZ was made due to evidence from Europe and on avian influenza findings in wild birds in GB. It follows a risk assessment containing the latest scientific evidence and veterinary advice.

The AIPZ now in force across GB, does not include a requirement to house birds. However, this is being kept under constant review. With the increased risk of avian influenza during the winter, the need to include a mandatory housing requirement in the AIPZ may happen.
