Campden BRI BRC v8 briefing seminars

Version eight of BRC Global Food Safety Standard is due to be released in August. Companies will be audited against the new standards from February 2019. BRC Global Food Safety Standard is the world’s largest food safety standard, with over 25,000 certificates issued annually.

Campden BRI’s BRC v8 briefing seminars, taking place during Autumn 2018, provide a timely opportunity to find out about the many changes to the standard and what your business will have to do to comply. Some of the key changes include:

  • Compulsory food safety culture
  • Whistle blowing mechanisms
  • FSMA compliance requirements
  • Protection of digital documents
  • Internal audits
  • Supplier approval / monitoring split
  • Traceability procedure
  • Food defence
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Fully validated cooking instructions
  • Creation of a “new” section 8
  • Section 9 – traded goods

Attendees will be given an overview of changes and protocol by BRC technical director, David Brackston, and will learn about environmental monitoring and food defence from Campden BRI food safety management system expert Richard Leathers. Bertrand Emond, Campden BRI, will talk about food safety culture and there will be a Q&A session.

These seminars are suitable for technical managers, those who work on supplier quality assurance schemes and auditors within the food industry.

Shooting for the Olympics on Target Thanks to Sponsorship

Shooting for the Olympics on Target Thanks to Sponsorship

A young man aiming to compete at the highest level in clay shooting is over the moon to have secured business sponsorship that will ensure he can continue training and realise his dream of one day competing at the Olympics.

With sponsorship secured from Redditch family business Oakland International covering gun cartridges, competition fees and funding for his GB kit should he be successful in selection for the Olympic team, Mitchell Brooker-Smith is now well on his way to becoming the Olympic contender he hopes to be.

Said Mitchell: “I feel extremely honoured to have the support of Oakland International and their sponsorship which means the world to me, and it has given me greater confidence knowing that there are people who care about the progression of my shooting besides my family and friends.

“My Granddad, Alan Brooker, is a huge part of my shooting. He takes me to all my training sessions and competitions and without him I would not be able to train or do as much as I do.

“Oakland International’s sponsorship will now mean I can train more for upcoming selection shoots and it also takes the financial pressure off my family, who work very hard to help and support me to get to where I want to be; shooting in the Olympics.”

After taking up shooting at the age of eleven at school, Mitchell was a natural and quickly progressed to become Bredon School’s Colt team captain, and after seeing Ben Llewelin win a silver medal at the 2016 Nicosia World Cup in Cyprus he quickly became his hero, and this was when Mitchell realised Olympic Skeet was his passion, and Ben the person Mitchell aspired to be.

Moving on to English skeet and then Olympic skeet, Mitchell was spotted by a British Shooting scout during a training session with his coach Richard Stepney and given the opportunity to try-out for GB selection through the organisation’s development programme, the Talent Pathway, for young-up and coming shooters, with Mitchell now selected and training hard as part of the Talent Pathway 2018 Team shooting Olympic Skeet.

Parents Anne-Marie Brooker and Phil Smith commented: “We’re extremely proud of everything Mitchell has achieved and so pleased that he’s made the most of every opportunity.”

This year’s 2018 British Selection shoots will decide which athletes will represent GB at the 2018 World Cups and World Championships, and if Mitchell secures his place to represent GB in 2019, he will be on his way to shooting for his place to compete at the Olympics and hopefully reach his other big goal of competing at the Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022.

Oakland International Chief Executive, Dean Attwell, commented: “A talented young man with great focus, determination and future potential, winning a number of competitions since taking up shooting in 2015 at the age of eleven. We are extremely delighted to sponsor Mitchell and support him, and his ambition to become a future Olympian and hopefully compete at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.”

Campden BRI sets up club to reduce chlorate levels in agriculture

Campden BRI sets up club to reduce chlorate levels in agriculture

Campden BRI is inviting companies to join a club project to investigate approaches to reduce chlorate levels in agricultural production and processing. The levels of chlorates in crops are of prime importance due to legal limits that are being introduced through EU legislation.

Research suggests that produce can contain chlorates at levels that exceed the new limits – for example, when chlorinating solutions have been used at both pre-harvest (irrigation) and post-harvest (washing) stages of production.

The project will:

  • Establish the effects of varying chlorinating agents on the chlorate levels of crop types both pre-harvest and post-harvest
  • Identify the use of alternative post-harvest washes that can be used to reduce chlorate levels
  • Compare the effects of novel/alternative produce washes and rinses that can reduce chlorate levels in leafy salads and other ready to eat products

The club will help the fresh produce industry to comply with legislative requirements and will be of interest to growers, produce marketing organisation, processors and retailers.

Participating companies have the opportunity to steer the project work.  Project results will be shared amongst the project members who can exploit the findings. The chlorate club project will begin in June 2018 and run for at least one year.

Icefresh Foods Ltd. to launch pre-school favourite Paw Patrol

Icefresh Foods Ltd. to launch pre-school favourite Paw Patrol

In the run up to summer 2018, Icefresh Foods Ltd is launching a new line of Paw Patrol ice-cream lollies, after winning licensing rights for the products in the UK. Based on the hit Nick Jr. pre-school show Paw Patrol, the paw-shaped chocolate and vanilla flavoured lollies are currently listed in Asda, Tesco, Co-op, Iceland, Aldi and Farmfoods.

Available in packs of four or six, these ice-cream lollies are made using natural flavourings and are free from artificial colours and preservatives. Each lolly is individually wrapped and at 69 calories per serve, they fall in line with Changes4Life snacking guidelines, which advise children have a maximum of two 100 calorie snacks per day.

Following on from the success of previous branded character ice-cream lolly licences, including Peppa Pig, Star Wars, Minions and Frozen, Scott Wilson, Brand Manager Icefresh Foods Ltd says he expects the products to be supermarket hit. “Over the years we’ve developed a strong range of licensed products which help retailers drive sales through high levels of brand recognition among customers, leading to repeat sales. Paw Patrol has a huge following and as these character lollies are free from artificial colourings, flavourings and preservatives, they’re sure to be popular with kids and parents alike.”
